Protection Goals

Environmental Protection and Circular Economy

The Ecodesign Regulation EU 2024/1781 came into force in mid-July 2024 and is the cornerstone for more environmentally sustainable and circular products.

It thus replaces the Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC, expands its scope and will in future regulate almost all physical products placed on the market or put into service in the EU. The Ecodesign Regulation aims to ensure that in future only durable, repairable and energy-efficient products are traded on the internal market.

Exceptions include food, animal feed, medicinal products, veterinary medicinal products, living plants/animals/microorganisms, products of human origin, products of plants and animals directly related to their future reproduction, and certain vehicles.

Sixteen ecodesign requirements are being introduced:

  • Recycled content
  • Water (use & efficiency)
  • Resources (use & efficiency)
  • Retrofittability
  • Recyclability
  • Estimated waste generation
  • Environmental impact
  • Energy (consumption & efficiency)
  • Reusability
  • Reliability
  • Potential material recovery
  • Substances of concern
  • Functional durability
  • Repairability
  • Maintenance & repair
  • Potential reprocessing
